Holiday Fun or Stress?

Jeremiah 17:7  (NLT)

“But blessed are those who trust in the Lord
and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.

I love the holidays when it comes to spending time with family and all of the decorations.  However, the hustle and bustle can be overwhelming.  Plus, there is a deadline for everything.

I love the lights and decorations and how the house looks once it is all up.  Getting it to that point though can be stressful.  Usually we are out of town for Thanksgiving and the last thing we want to do when we come back from the long drive is drag all of the Christmas decorations out.  So we will wait until the next weekend, but then it starts to feel like what’s the point when we will be putting them away in a few more weeks.

This year, we got to spend Thanksgiving at home and so we were able to take the long weekend and decorate the house.  It was nice, but I still had empty boxes sitting in a room by the storage door that needed put away and stacked neatly.  I finally decided to take care of it tonight and once again found myself thinking of ways to downsize for next year.

A few years ago, I decided to put out Fall decor at the end of September to get the most out of my harvest decorations.  So it stays up until Thanksgiving and then gets swapped out for Christmas. Christmas will fly by though and it will seem like we are taking it all down before really getting to enjoy it.

Don’t get me wrong.  I am blessed and thankful for all that we have.  It just gets a little overwhelming and I feel guilty about not staying focused on the blessings and what really matters.

Gifts are usually easy at this point, but then we have this one relative who never buys for us and has decided we should exchange gifts this year.  So now there is an added stress to find something for this person.

The highlight has been the shoebox giving that we have done that goes to kids in need and in a couple of weeks we get to work with children on shopping at a school store for gifts for their family.  It is so fun to see them light up over these gifts and get so creative.  It is during those times, that you see the true spirit of the holiday season.
